As has been noted in this newsletter a few times of late, the big-money boom era for podcasts is perhaps behind us. Fewer shows are being released, layoffs are happening across the industry, and spending on new projects is down. All of this potentially sounds Quite Bad, especially given how accustomed we’ve been to seeing huge amounts of cash floating around the podcast ecosystem – most memorably illustrated by Joe Rogan’s $200m Spotify deal.

However, as with the current TV streaming wars it’s also likely that what we’re seeing is merely the result of a new medium adjusting to a period of unbridled, and ultimately unsustainable, growth. As podcast strategist Eric Nuzum put it in this New York Times piece (which also notes that pod downloads were up in the US last year, compared to 2021) “the business will figure itself out”.
